A toddler has tragically died after being attacked by three dogs in Texas.

The 1-year-old boy, who has not yet been identified, died from severe injuries sustained in the attack in Duncanville on the morning of Monday, April 15, the Duncanville Police Department stated in a press release.

The incident occurred while the toddler was being babysat and the dogs walked into the property despite being confined outside, Duncanville Interim Police Chief Matthew Stogner said in a news conference on Monday.

Police responded to the scene at around 10:40 a.m. on April 15 where they “immediately began performing life-saving measures on the unconscious child,” per the release. The toddler was transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where they continued to work on him before he was pronounced dead.

The dogs involved in the attack were of “[German] shepherd mix,” weighing approximately 80 lbs., Stogner shared in the news conference. “The dogs were outside, somehow they made their way back inside the house where the incident took place,” he said.

Three other children were also believed to be in the home at the time of the attack, who were left “unharmed,” and one adult.

Stogner said of the adult’s injuries in the attack, “The dogs were confined in the house, they were not loose. The resident at the location, she attempted to pull the dogs from the infant unsuccessfully until the officers got there, at which point, she sustained some injuries as well.”

Police confirmed that Duncanville Animal Control responded to the scene and “secured possession of the dogs” following the attack.

David Trout, who is the brother of the injured resident’s ex-husband, described the babysitter as a “sweetheart” to NBC 5, who “means well.”

"She jumped in between and tried to, I guess, tear them apart," Trout told the news outlet. “She’s taken care of kids down there forever without any kind of problems. I just hate it for her.”

"Our hearts go out to the family," Stogner said in conclusion after the attack. "This is certainly a tragedy."

"It's important for all animal owners to ensure that their animals are confined and if there's kids around to ensure that there's some adult supervision around in case something like this were to happen," he added.

An investigation is ongoing with “potential for criminal charges to be filed,” authorities stated in the release.
