1-Year-Old and 3-Month-Old Among 32 Dead After Hurricane Florence
The body of a 1-year-old boy in North Carolina has been found after he was swept away by floodwaters spawned by Hurricane Florence. The child is one of 32 fatalities of the storm.
Dazia Lee got out of her vehicle with her son on a flooded street in Charlotte Sunday after the waters pushed their car into a tree and accidentally lost her grip of her son’s car seat.
Kaiden Lee Welch’s body was found Monday after he was swept into Richardson Creek, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said. Lee was transported to a local hospital after the accident.
Two infants, 3-month-old child Kade Gill and a 7-month-old baby, were both killed in separate instances when trees fell on their homes during the storm as well, according to reports.
Officials said 25 of the 32 people who died as a result of the storm died in North Carolina.
Six people were also killed in South Carolina and one in Virginia, reports said.
Power is still out for nearly 500,000 homes and businesses, predominately in North Carolina, reports said.
The storm, which was considered a post-tropical cyclone Tuesday, poured nearly 40 inches of rain in some parts of North Carolina.
The city of Wilmington remains completely flooded, with nearly 700 rescues taking place in the area. County officials said 120,000 people were stranded and officials were preparing to begin distributing supplies there as of Tuesday morning.
"There's too much going on," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.
