CCSU student killed, four other injured in one-car rollover crash in Willington

State police are investigating a fatal crash that left a Central Connecticut State University student dead and four people injured in Willington on Saturday night.

Just after 10 p.m. Saturday, a 21-year-old man from Bethel was driving a Subaru Legacy on River Road with four passengers in the vehicle when, for an unknown reason, he lost control of the car, according to the Connecticut State Police.

The Subaru rolled over, killing one of the backseat passengers, who was identified as 19-year-old Maria Rita Da Mata of Bethel, police said.

The driver and three other passengers, a 19-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, all from Bethel, were taken to Hartford Hospital to be treated for suspected minor injuries, according to police.

CCSU president Zulma R. Toro announced Da Mata’s death in an email to the campus community on Monday morning.

“My heart goes out to Maria Rita Da Mata’s family,” Toro said. “Maria was well on her way to completing a degree in Marketing from our School of Business. The university family will keep the Da Mata family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Any student in need of counseling was encouraged to reach out to the Student Wellness Services office, Toro added.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Priscilla Polci with Connecticut State Police Troop C at 860-896-3200.
