There was a graduation ceremony for Southwest Secondary Learning Center, an Albuquerque charter school, happening at the time. APD says they arrested 21-year-old Cristian Bencomo for the shooting. They say he shot his stepmother who was attending the graduation for her son. She went to hug Bencomo and that’s when he shot her in the neck. She is in critical but stable condition.

According to APD, a witness said Bencomo looked like he was going to stomp on his stepmother. The witness said he was able to grab Bencomo by the belt and pull him away. Another bystander also intervened and held Bencomo down.

Detectives tried to speak with Bencomo but they say he declined to make a statement. He is being booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Police are asking for anyone who took photos or videos of the incident, or has information on what happened, to contact police at 505-242-COPS.
