1 dead after police officer shoots man in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting happened in San Marcos on Thursday, according to the City of San Marcos.

A city news release said two men told 911 dispatchers they were being followed by a man when they were walking in the area of East Hopkins and Cheatham Street in San Marcos. The callers said “the man followed them from a convenience store on Cheatham Street.”

Then, the man pulled out “two large knives” and “threatened” them, the release said. That man was described as shorter Black man in his 20s and was wearing a yellow shirt and blue pants. According to police, he walked away from the area when the two men called 911.

Then, around 10:33 p.m., officers saw the man after he went back to the convenience store, the release said. The man and an officer walked out of the store, and that is when the man ran to an “occupied business” across the street.

Officers were not able to stop the man with a stun gun. Police shot the man after he ran toward a business while holding the knife, the release said.

Officers provided first aid to the man, and he was then taken to Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle where he was pronounced dead, the release said. Police did not identify the man Friday.

No other injuries were reported, according to the city.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner. The shooting remained under investigation by law enforcement Friday.
