1 dead in Harbor Boulevard crash

A Port Hueneme man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Harbor Boulevard near McGrath State Beach Saturday morning, officials said.

The accident was reported around 5:25 a.m. on southbound Harbor, south of the intersection with Gonzales Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was identified as Jason Douglas Provost, 53, by the CHP on Saturday evening.

Provost had been driving a silver 2021 Toyota Camry southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, he veered onto the right shoulder and hit a power pole, CHP officials said. No one else was in the car.

Oxnard Fire Department and Ventura County crews responded and pulled the victim from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officials don't yet know whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The site is in a mostly agricultural area where Harbor Boulevard divides Oxnard city limits and unincorporated county land. The accident scene was in the county's jurisdiction, a fire official said.

The incident closed the southbound lane for a time. Lanes had reopened shortly after 8 a.m.

The fatality was the second on Oxnard-area roadways in two days. A 26-year-old Oxnard woman was killed early Friday when her vehicle flipped over after she failed to negotiate a curve on the Santa Clara Avenue offramp from northbound Highway 101, CHP officials said.
