1 dead following Putnam County house fire

PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A fire broke out at a Putnam County home Thursday night, leaving one person dead and a first responder injured.

The Putnam County Fire Department (PCFD) said its crews, along with members of the Baxter Fire Department, were dispatched to a residence with a report of a person inside at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

When units arrived at the house, they discovered it was heavily involved in flames and confirmed someone was still inside. Firefighters entered the home through a window, removed the victim from the blaze, and turned them over to awaiting medical personnel within minutes, according to the PCFD.

Emergency personnel said the patient had no pulse, so they performed life-saving measures, regained the pulse, and stabilized the victim for transport to Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

However, while the individual was being taken to a hospital outside the county for further treatment, they lost their pulse again. The ambulance diverted to the nearest hospital, but the patient ultimately died from their injuries, officials said.

One Putnam County firefighter was also brought to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for evaluation after reportedly sustaining minor injuries during the incident. That firefighter has since been released.
