1 dead in double shooting near Fairfax County shopping center

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Police in Fairfax County were on the scene of a double shooting that left a man dead on Wednesday morning.

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said the shooting happened at about 9:30 a.m. in a parking lot near a Dunkin’ in the 14600 block of Rt. 29 in Centreville. Two men had been shot in their upper bodies.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. They were in the same car at the time of the shooting.

“At first I didn’t really think they were shots,” said David Michaelangelo, who lives near the shopping center.

“I basically thought it was just some kind of accident or somebody hitting a truck somehow, or, you know, construction or something,” he continued.

“I was so scared,” said Olanrewuaju Olorunmole.

He said he heard the gunshots while he was working on his truck that broke down near the crime scene.

“I get out and I look out, and I see the people run there, and I saw the body on the floor,” Olorunmole said.

The shooting left neighbors shaken.

“I moved my family here because it was a good neighborhood, a good place to live,” Michaelangelo said. “So this is going to be kind of heartbreaking to see this happen.”

Preliminarily, investigators said they believe the incident may have happened during a narcotics transaction.

In an update, FCPD Captain Kent Bailey said two firearms were found at the scene and that the two men seemed to be the only people involved in the shooting.
