1 dead after car flips over on Dale Mabry Highway in South Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A section of Dale Mabry Highway in South Tampa was closed for three hours early Thursday due to a deadly crash.

Tampa police said they were called to a single-vehicle crash on South Dale Mabry Highway between Gandy Boulevard and South Church Avenue around 12:05 a.m.

Investigators said a man in his early 20s was driving a Toyota Camry at a high speed on the Selmon Express connector from the Gandy Bridge.

When the driver tried to exit onto the ramp to South Dale Mabry, police said he hit the side wall. “This caused the car to overturn and land in the southbound lanes of Dale Mabry Highway,” Tampa police said.

Video from the scene showed a car flipped over on its roof.

Police said the driver was the only person in the car. He died at the scene.

All southbound lanes of South Dale Mabry Highway were closed due to the crash. The lanes reopened just before 5 a.m.
