1 dead among 3 shot in Marion County on Sunday morning, authorities say

MARION COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — One person was killed Sunday morning in a shooting that left two others hospitalized, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Devante Marquise Legette, 29, of Mullins, died hours after the 5 a.m. incident on Evans Court just outside of Mullins. Two other people were transported to the MUSC Marion Emergency Department by private vehicles and are expected to survive.

Legette was facing murder and other charges at the time of his death in connection with the death of James Cross Jr. in October 2023 in Marion. That incident happened in the 800 block of Bluff Street. Online public records show those charges were dismissed on Monday.

Legette was also sentenced to five years in prison after he was involved in a 2017 shooting that killed Freddie Lee Woodberry of Mullins. He initially was charged with attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery, court records show.

Authorities said Sunday’s shooting remains a “very active investigation” and ask anyone with information to call 843-423-8399 or to email mscsoevidence@marionsc.org.
