1 dead, 1 injured after shooting during argument between family members in Hammond

HAMMOND, Ind. — One person is dead and another is injured after a shooting during an apparent argument between family members in Northwest Indiana early Saturday morning.

According to the Hammond Police Department, officers were called to a home in the 1900 block of Warwick Avenue, around 4:30 a.m., following reports of a disturbance in the area.

After arriving on the scene, officers found two people who had both suffered gunshot wounds.

Police say one of the victims had been shot in the shoulder and was taken to the hospital.

The second victim suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities have since identified the man as Charles Stokes, however, officers did not provide an age or location of residence for the victim.

According to police, a preliminary investigation has revealed that the shooting unfolded during a family argument, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear.

Hammond police say the shooting was an isolated incident, and there is no immediate threat to the public.

Officers say they expect to release more details about the shooting as the investigation continues.
