1 critically injured when train hits car in West Palm; traffic backed up east of FEC tracks

WEST PALM BEACH — One person sustained critical injuries Wednesday evening after a train and a car crashed downtown, West Palm Beach police said.

The wreck along the Florida East Coast Railway tracks backed traffic up for nearly 2 miles along Dixie Highway, from south of Belvedere Road nearly to Third Street, as cars could not cross east-west roads.

The crash took place on the 500 block of Fern Street. As of 7 p.m., traffic blocked to Okeechobee Boulevard as police crews investigated the crash.
