Student arrested after stabbing outside Lafayette High School

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo police responded to a call at Lafayette High School Tuesday morning, where an 18-year-old student was arrested following an alleged stabbing.

A heavy police presence could be seen around the school when officers arrived just after 8 a.m. They say two men were involved in a dispute outside the building, where one allegedly stabbed the other in the back with a pocket knife.

By the time police arrived, the fight had been broken up by the principal and school security, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. School resource officers were not on-site at the time of the alleged fight.

Harun Sabriye, 18, was subsequently charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

From the information they’ve gathered, Sabriye and the victim, a 19-year-old former student, are known to each other, police said. According to Gramaglia, officials received information that the fight was over the sale of a video gaming console where the money allegedly was not paid.

Gramaglia went on to say it appears the victim confronted Sabriye, leading to an argument that escalated into a fight.

According to police, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to ECMC. Sabriye suffered a cut to his hand, they said.

“Fortunately, others were not hurt,” a statement from Buffalo Public Schools read. “Superintendent Dr. Tonja Williams has directed Crisis Prevention and Response Staff to be onsite at the school to provide support to students and staff. As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”

One parent told News 4 that this is the third incident involving a BPS student this year and that the district needs to keep its word about prioritizing safety.

“Where was the adult set in place to see that this student was on campus to confront another student?” Aymanuel Radford, of We The Parents of WNY, said. “How are we letting people onto a campus where students are at? If you don’t attend the school? I think we need to have way more checks and balances for people where allow them to come onto campus.”
