$1.5 billion expansion into Florence County EV battery plant to create 1,000+ jobs

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Japanese battery technology company has increased its expansion into a Florence County EV battery plant with a $1.5 billion investment expected to create more than a 1,000 new jobs, according to a news release.

AESC, a world-leading battery technology company, announced Tuesday the expansion of its lithium-ion electric vehicle battery manufacturing operations in the county. The expansion follows its $810 million commitment in December.

With the investment, AESC now has $3.12 billion in the county and is expected to bring a total of 2,700 new jobs, the release said. The state-of-the-art facility will be adjacent to its first building, which broke ground last June.

It will be located in the Florence Global Technology Park, according to the release. Operations are expected to be online in 2027.

“AESC’s second expansion in less than four months in Florence County signals yet another vote of confidence in our state and our people,” Gov. Henry McMaster said in the release. “This investment is another monumental win for Florence County, and we look forward to the substantial impact this will have throughout South Carolina.”
