'Dancing With the Stars' Week 2 Recap: Kellie Zooms to the Top Alongside Zendaya

The "Idol" alum ties the Disney darling for the highest score of the night with a modern jazz routine, but it's not enough to topple Zendaya from the leader spot.

It's Week 2 of "Dancing With the Stars," and that means a generous helping of the jive, some quick work of the quickstep, and … what's that? Did someone say jazz?

For viewers who missed last week's contemporary-infused kickoff, the new season of the long-running ABC dance competition has brought on two new dance styles, the first additions to the roster since Season 9. Last season, contemporary and jazz dances were featured only one time: during those wacky theme-week combos (who can forget Apolo and Karina's big top jazz, which had Cirque du Soleil colliding with "A Clockwork Orange"?), but this season they're back with a vengeance.

With new dances, new music, and, for some, new attitudes, Week 2 featured fewer jitters and more generosity -- from the judges, that is. (OK, so they didn't exactly break out the "10" paddles yet, but they'll get there. Baby steps.)

So how did the "Dancing" crew do in Week 2? Here are the highlights:

Kellie joins Zendaya at the top

Last week's leaderboard topper has a few choice words for people who think she has an unfair advantage. On her blog for Access Hollywood, the "Shake It Up" star wrote: "Everyone keeps asking me if my hip-hop background will help me, but this type of dancing is basically the exact opposite of what I'm used to. I have to go back and forget everything I've ever learned when it comes to dancing!"

Well, let's just say this girl is very good at forgetting. The 16-year-old smashed the competition (again!), dancing a spectacular jive that had judge Bruno Tonioli declaring, "A star is born big time!" The Disney star earned the first nines of the season, finishing with an impressive 26 points and firmly marking her territory at the top of the judges' leaderboard.

Right below Zendaya was country singer Kellie Pickler, who's no stranger to TV vote-off shows, although the "American Idol" alum describes "DWTS" as "a whole different type of scary." Still, this pixie princess managed to scare up some fabulous scores from the judges, despite her partner, Derek Hough, taking risks with their choreography. The three-time mirror ball champ pushed the envelope last season with Shawn Johnson and paid the price once or twice when he got slammed for incorporating flips and dives into their dances. This time, however, his crazy choreography earned a standing O -- and a pair of nines.

Jive talkin'

After a tough week in rehearsals, Victor Ortiz almost walked out on pro dancer Lindsay Arnold. Instead the boxer stuck around to dance an energetic jive, although his feet sometimes had a mind of their own. The dance provided some colorful commentary from Bruno, who said, "At one point you looked like a zumba dance. ... Your bum sticks out like an overhang!"

"The Bachelor" star Sean Lowe showed his muscles (but not his legs!) in a lifeguard-themed jive complete with cartwheels, but his shark-infested moves had the judges divided. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno liked it, but Len Goodman didn't quite understand it. (And no one understood the yellow sweatpants!)

After missing some prime rehearsal time due to a hurt ankle, Dorothy Hamill danced a sock hop-style "Chantilly Lace" jive with partner Tristan MacManus. Carrie Ann told the former Olympian she sensed her fear this week. "Don't let fear in," she warned.

And Lisa Vanderpump is a bruiser -- literally! The "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star was sporting bruises from her rough-and-tumble rehearsals, and she has already said the dance-off should "come with a health warning." She danced a turbulent airline-themed jive with newbie pro dancer Gleb Savchenko, which Len called "a little wooden." Of course, the bigger concern was that her entire SUR wait staff was in the audience cheering her on. Who was minding the store?

Quicksteps to the leaderboard

Last week's bottom-dweller, D.L. Hughley was downright humiliated over his lowly score of 12 points, but pro partner Cheryl Burke told TV Guide that he's loving the quickstep a lot more than the cha cha because "he doesn't have to move his hips." What he did move was the scoreboard. (Hey, there's one thing about getting a 12: There's nowhere to go but up!) After a heated week -- and a lot of hard work -- the comedian managed to eke out a mix of fives and sixes from the judges, although Bruno reminded him, "You're not Fred Astaire, so don't get too excited!" On his score, Hughley said, "They already used up all the fours."

See who walks out during D.L.'s rehearsal:

Ingo Rademache and Kym Johnson danced a quirky quickstep and garnered a thumbs-up (and a "Bingo, Ingo!") from Len, but the judges were divided on this dance. While Len loved the "General Hospital" star's frame, Carrie Ann thought it was "a little off."

Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani channeled their inner mall cop for a slow-mo quickstep that, as Bruno noted, "ended up kind of like a casual stroll," while former Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman and her partner, Mark Ballas, danced what Carrie Ann declared "the best quickstep of the night!"

All that jazz

Comedian Andy Dick and his pro partner, Sharna Burgess, danced a jerky jazz to a Mad Hatter theme, but the dance's liberal guidelines allowed them to be "wacko, demented, and nail it," according to Carrie Ann. Meanwhile, Super Bowl champ Jacoby Jones and his partner, Karina Smirnoff, impressed with their take on the jazz. Len called it "full of razzle dazzle."
