'60 Minutes' Bob Simon dies in car crash

Twitter reaction to news man's passing is swift, powerful

Legendary newsman Bob Simon was killed Wednesday night in a car crash in New York City. The celebrated “60 Minutes” correspondent’s storied career spanned five decades. He joined CBS News in 1967 and covered war zones around the world beginning with the Vietnam War. Simon, 73, remained active on the broadcast, covering both conflict and culture. He reported a feature on the Oscar-nominated civil rights drama "Selma" that aired just last weekend.

"Bob was a reporter's reporter. He was driven by a natural curiosity that took him all over the world covering every kind of story imaginable," said 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager in a statement.

"It is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident, a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in modern times,” Fager said.

Journalists and celebrities quickly took to social media to share their shock over Simon’s sudden death, and to celebrate the 27-time Emmy award winner's career, with many tweeting links to Simon’s reports.
