Zedd completes his journey up Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, as "Stay the Night" rises to the top (3-1).
The track is the second No. 1 on the Nielsen BDS-based tally for Zedd and the first for featured vocalist Hayley Williams of Paramore, who previously hit the top 10 three years ago when she sang on "Airplanes" by B.o.B. While Zedd reached No. 1 on the chart with "Spectrum," his big pop crossover breakthrough, "Clarity," stalled just short of the top, spending five non-consecutive weeks at No. 2 (the first three behind Krewella's "Alive" and the last two trailing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky").
"Stay" concurrently becomes Zedd's third consecutive No. 1 on Dance Club Songs (2-1), utilizing remixes from Tiesto, Nicky Romero and DJ Snake, among others. The track holds strong on the overall sales/airplay/streaming/club-based Dance/Electronic Songs chart (3-3) and Dance/Electronic Digital Songs (3-3, 49,000 downloads sold, up 11%, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
'THINGS' JUST GOT BETTER: Cedric Gervais and Howard Jones explode into the top 10 (16-8) on Dance/Mix Show Airplay with "Things Can Only Get Better," marking the first top 10 for label Robbins since Afrojack & Shermanology took "Can't Stop Me" to No. 4 in June 2012. Fans of the original, unremixed version of "Things" might want to check out the Howard Jones Chill Mix, an acoustic take miles away from the Gervais and Kaz James remixes.
Jones' original "Better" reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on Dance Club Songs in 1985. The rise of the new version grants Jones his first top 10 on a Billboard chart since 1992. His midtempo pop song "Lift Me Up" rose to No. 10 on Adult Contemporary 21 years ago.
'BROTHER'-LY LOVE: Avicii enters Dance/Mix Show Airplay at No. 24 with "Hey Brother," the third hit from his No. 1 Dance/Electronic Albums set "True" (which rebounds 5-2; 5,000 units, up 2%, according to Nielsen SoundScan). "Wake Me Up!" recently spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the radio ranking (second this year only to Daft Punk's "Lucky"; 11 weeks) and follow-up "You Make Me" topped out at No. 15 a month ago.
"Brother" edges 12-11 on Dance/Electronic Songs as this week's Streaming Gainer, bounding 25-16 on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs with 635,000 U.S. streams, according to BDS.
SUMMER TIME: Powered by new Laidback Luke remixes, the late Donna Summer debuts on Dance/Electronic Songs at No. 34 with "MacArthur Park 2013." The track has been cruising up Dance Club Songs, charging 22-12 in its fourth week.
'ANIMALS' ASCENDS: Martin Garrix could be poised to take the No. 1 slot next week on Dance Club Songs, as "Animals" jumps 3-2. The DJ's breakthrough smash achieves a new peak on Dance/Electronic Songs (8-7), where it's the Digital Gainer (26,000, up 41%), and returns to its No. 5 peak on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs.
"Animals" marches to a new Hot 100 peak (83-72). Check out this week's Billboard magazine (dated Dec. 7) for an exclusive Q&A with Garrix on the Hot 100's pages.
