Zayn Is Designing Versus Versace's Upcoming Spring-Summer Collection: Exclusive

Since Versace's debut in 1978, the brand has been defining pop culture through memorably stylish moments, including Jennifer Lopez's famous sheer green plunging-neck gown she wore to the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000.

Now the Italian luxury brand's contemporary line, Versus Versace, is banking on the rising solo career  -  and enviable style -  of pop recording artist Zayn Malik. Announced today, the former One Direction member is collaborating with Donatella Versace to produce a menswear and womenswear capsule collection that will debut in May 2017.

This is not the first time Zayn has explored the fashion world. For his first-ever MET Gala, he wore an understated black suit with metal sleeves designed by Versace. In August, the "Pillow Talk" singer announced a collaboration with shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti that launches in January 2017.

"I think Versus has always been a very cool brand," Malik said in a statement, adding that he "always" wanted to design clothes, and is looking forward to working closely with Versace.

Integrating fashion with music is part of the brand's 38-year heritage. Donatella Versace, Chief Designer and Vice President of Versace, tells Billboard exclusively: "For me, Versus has always been about bringing together the worlds of fashion and music. From our first ever Versus shows in New York in the 90s, we had bands playing, and a crowd of club kids rather than the usual fashion audience. Music and fashion are even closer than ever. It feels like they are almost the same thing. As soon as I met Zayn, I knew that I wanted to work with him in some way."

A portion of the net proceeds of the capsule collection will be donated to charity.
