YouTube to Live Stream Coachella Weekend 2 with 360-Degree Video

YouTube started offering 360-degree videos last year, allowing users to see videos from a multitude of angles by simply dragging their mouse cursor around or moving their mobile device. Now, they’re going to start streaming live 360-degree videos starting this week, coinciding with the second weekend of Coachella. The first concert to use the technology will be a Dawn Richard show in conjunction with The Verge on April 20 at 8 P.M. EST, and will be followed by a select number of performances during Weekend 2 of Coachella.
The streams will also take advantage of a new feature called “spatial audio,” which will adjust audio to different levels based on the real-life sources. YouTube’s Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan said in a statement, “Just as watching a concert in 360° can give you an unmatched immersive experience, spatial audio allows you to listen along as you do in real life, where depth, distance and intensity all play a role.”
Coachella and YouTube have yet to announce which of the performances at the show will offer 360-video, but expect it to mostly be those performing on the main stage. Look out for more regarding the new feature this Friday (April 21) when the second weekend of Coachella officially commences.
