No longer in space but still technological wonders, the last four space shuttles attracted crowds online and along their routes to museums on opposite coasts. Piggybacked on specially modified 747s, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour and the prototype Enterprise (which had never left the ground before) buzzed by American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and the Golden Gate Bridge on their way to their final resting places.

About 400 trees were removed along a south Los Angeles street to allow room for the Endeavour to inch its way to the California Science Museum, where it will go on permanent display.
