Watch Melanie Fiona ‘Bite the Bullet’ at Yahoo Music

Melanie Fiona says her forthcoming junior album, Awake, reflects her truest self to date. She’s in a happier place than she was during the recording of her last album, The MF Life. “I definitely gained a spiritual connection to myself and to the power of words and intentions and the power of positive thinking,” she explains during a recent stop by the Yahoo Music offices to discuss Awake and to deliver an acoustic rendition of the lead track “Bite the Bullet.”

Melanie has experienced a lot of changes, personally and professionally, since her last album. During the three years, she has fallen in love, fallen out of love, and fallen back in love and become an independent recording artist. Awake will be released on her own Title 9 Productions in partnership with Primary Wave BMG label services. “It’s an amazing thing to almost get a second chance to start over again, and to have all creative control,” she says.

Melanie used her executive power to kick off the album with the reggae-inspired “Bite the Bullet” which reflects her Caribbean heritage. Her parents migrated from Guyana to Toronto. “I always have one or two reggae-influenced tracks,” she says. “If you come to the live show, it’s always there. I felt it was perfect to release the reggae-influenced track first. I want people to appreciate that part of me and my artistry and have fun with it.”

During the interview, Melanie has a bit of fun taking a walk down memory lane. She recalls her days being in a group with Drake back in Canada, being in the background of the girl group X-Quisite, and the origins of her reggae alter ego, Syren Hall.
