Watch the First Trailer for 'Beaches' Remake with Idina Menzel

Billboard

Lifetime has finally unleashed the first trailer for its remake of the 1988 weepy melodrama Beaches starring Idina Menzel as C.C. and Nia Long as Hillary. In the clip the pair meet as children and pose in a photo booth before we see them as adults, with Menzel taking on the role of an aspiring singer originally played by Bette Midler role and Long playing the supportive best friend character and lawyer, (who, spoiler alert, has a deadly disease) first played by Barbara Hershey.

Like the original, the remake -- which will air on Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. ET -- chronicles the pair's 30-year friendship and, of course, will feature Menzel's updated cover of the titanic ballad "Wind Beneath My Wings." Midler had one of the biggest hits of her career with the song, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989 and scooped up Record and Song of the Year at the 1990 Grammy Awards. The other best-known song from the flick, "The Glory of Love," will also be featured in the update.
