Video Emerges of Man Being Waterboarded at Australian Dance Music Festival

There isn't a lot of information available about a short video that surfaced showing a man being waterboarded at Earthcore Dance Festival in Victoria, Australia, which took place from Nov. 24-28.

The man, who appears to be in his early 20s, lies down on a tilted surface, his face covered by a cloth, and is clearly uncomfortable when water is poured over his face for a few moments, although he doesn't seem to believe he is in any real danger. He is shown smiling when the cloth is removed as a voice says "that was nothing."

"Do you want some waterboarding?" a female voice queries at the video's start. An onlooker replies, "I kind of want to try it."

The Daily Mail Australia reports that the activity happened at The Brink of Reality stage, hosted by a Melbourne party crew by the same name who specialize in post-apocalyptic environments. The report states the video was originally posted by the brand's Instagram, though it has since been removed.

A Brink of Reality spokesman told the Daily Mail: "The video wasn't posted by The Brink officially, and was made by two private citizens with ongoing consent being provided and checked on by both parties, with possible safety precautions being taken. It isn't condoned by the crew, but The Brink feels strongly that if two consenting adults want to do something, they should be allowed to do so."

Billboard Dance has reached out to both Earthcore Dance Festival for comment. The Brink group sent the following comment:

The video wasn't posted by The Brink officially, and was made by two private citizens with ongoing consent being provided and checked on by both parties, with possible safety precautions being taken. It isn't condoned by the crew, but The Brink feels strongly that if two consenting adults want to do something, they should be allowed to do so.

In an unrelated incident, a 43-year-old woman was reportedly found dead at the festival. Organizers have said she had an "existing medical condition."

Waterboarding is a controversial interrogation technique currently banned by the U.S. government.
