Tyrese Puts Jennifer Hudson Through Hell in ‘Shame’ Video
Tyrese and Jennifer Hudson have combined their acting and musical strengths for Tyrese’s forthcoming short film Shame. Tyrese just released the title track’s video, which offers a condensed version of the project produced by Denzel Washington and directed by Paul Hunter.
Both actors display their chops. In addition to their strong performances – Hudson contributes piercing doo-wop/girl-group backing vocals – their acting adds color to the chilling storyline about Tyrese’s past as a womanizer.
Set in the 1960s, the short opens with Tyrese confessing his indiscretions to a Catholic priest, and the backstory unfolds to show him cheating on his wife (Hudson) with a background singer, getting physically abusive, and battling alcohol addiction.
Tyrese admits the song is based on real life. “’Shame’ is my most transparent song to date,” he says in a statement about the song co-produced by Warryn Campbell. “I wish I could say that the inspiration behind this was me breaking one heart, but I have broken many hearts from being a man who assumed that because you used the words ‘I love you’ that I really knew what love was. I discovered I knew nothing of what love is. You will grow through what you go through. I have put some beautiful hearts and innocent people through hell and I’m ashamed of it. That’s my truth, and my truth produced this moment.”
“Shame” appears on Tyrese’s album, Black Rose, due out July 10 and available for pre-order. The Shame short will begin its festival run in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.
