Tommy Stinson on Guns N' Roses' Future: 'I Really Have No Idea What's Going On'

What a life Tommy Stinson is leading. The 48-year old bassist became a slacker rock legend via The Replacements and then joined the ranks of arena rock bombast via the latter-day Guns N’ Roses lineup. In a Sept. 3 interview with the Star Tribune, he spoke on his future with both bands.

“I didn’t quit the gig or walk away from it,” he said, referring to GNR. “We just all sort of left it in Vegas.” Stinson last played with Guns N’ Roses at an April 2014 show in Las Vegas. “I reach out once in a while to that crew of people – a lot of whom are also my good friends – but I really have no idea what’s going on.”

Are the Replacements Done? Paul Westerberg’s T-Shirt May Hold the Answer

Stinson has been playing bass for Axl Rose in the renovated version of Guns N’ Roses since 1998. However, rumors are circling over an alleged reunion of the band’s classic 1987 lineup, which would mean Duff McKagan taking over bass duties, along with Steven Adler, Izzy Stradlin and Slash rejoining the ranks.

The rumors are centered around Axl Rose recently reconciling with Slash in an interview with Sweden’s Aftonbladet. Rose did brush off reunion, however, in a May 2015 interview with CBS This Morning.

Slash Opens Door to Guns N’ Roses Reunion

As for Westerberg’s original band, it appears the book is closed on The Replacements’ reunion – at least for now.

“It was one of those things. We dipped our toe in the water, and it didn’t feel so good,” he said, regarding recent writing sessions with frontman Paul Westerberg. “I won’t say never, but the songs of mine that we recorded, I’ve redone.“

With The Replacements’ recent run of reunion shows done, Stinson is focused on solo material.
