How to Throw a Successful Music Event

Shabazz from Electric Circus shares some advice.

Pulling off an event, making it run smoothly and look easy is a challenge unto itself. For the seventh installment of “P&P Pro Tips,” a nine-part show that has everyone from artists to producers share their industry expertise, party ringleader Shabazz shares some tips on how to throw the perfect evening with a few key requirements.

Shabazz, who runs Electric Circus and claims to be “responsible for all cool events in New York City,” has been in the game for the past six years, giving artists like Lil Yachty and Kodak Black some of their earliest looks around town. When it comes to preparations, she lets it all run down to the wire. “I know I have an RSVP link that’s still open and it’s going crazy because people know it’s the last day, they always try to RSVP last minute, so I’m going to close that and I’m going to make sure I invite specific people I want to be there,” she says.

It’s necessary, says Shabazz, to make sure that you have someone on hand to capture the commotion. “What’s really important to me personally is documenting the actual vibe and the culture that attends these events,” she says. “It’s not even about perception, like let’s make it look bigger than what it is, but it really looks cool to see the different diverse kids that come.”

Party throwers can ruin what could have been a good time without coming prepared. But the product is in the preparations. “You’ve got to really curate it with the proper DJs and hosts that’s gonna bring that energy. It’s very important to have someone with the mic who knows how to keep it going and entertain and it’s really important to make sure the DJs know how to read the crowd,” she explains. “If I had to give tips to anybody trying to get into event production or anything like that, try to have a team, try to meet your artists’ needs, make sure their rider’s right whether it’s a personal rider or a tech rider and just make sure the vibe is what they would like.”
