Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins on If He’d Ever Run for President

Third Eye Blind made national headlines this week when the group trolled Republicans during a Musicians on Call charity concert in Cleveland, where the Republican National Convention had been taking place. Frontman Stephan Jenkins graced the crowd with only one 3EB hit, “Jumper” (notably about a gay man who committed suicide); shouted out, “Raise your hand if you believe in science!”; performed “Non-Dairy Creamer” (an anti-war song with the repeated line “young gay Republicans”); and was booed as he preached about “tolerance and acceptance.”

Later, Jenkins tweeted that he and 3EB “repudiate every last stitch of the RNC platform and the grotesque that is their nominee. Science is science. Coal is not clean. Black Lives Matter. LGBTQ = equal. Separation of church and state (still a good idea). We could go on.”

Now some fans who agreed with Jenkins’s bold RNC stance might wonder if the alt-rocker, age 51, would ever consider running for office himself.

“I’d like to be President. Nobody ever says that!” joked last year, during an interview at 3EB’s Nashville rehearsal space for Backstage with Citi. While he didn’t seem serious about such White House aspirations, he did say politics was his longtime “hobby,” that 2009’s Ursa Major was “a very political record,” and he’s “going to write a book about politics” one day.

Would you ever vote for Jenkins – or at least read his book?
