The Guy Who Discovered Water on Mars Is Also a Heavy-Metal Guitarist
As a kid, everyone wants to be a rock star or an astronaut, but few people actually get to be one – let alone two.
Georgia Tech grad student Lujendra Ojha just happens to be one of those few. He recently made headlines for finding water on Mars. Cool, right? Doesn’t stop there. Before he was making sci-fi dreams come true, Ojha was a heavy-metal guitarist in his band Gorkha.

His life as a NASA rock star started as an undergraduate at University of Arizona, where he noticed dark streaks on photos of Mars’ surface. He established a new way to analyze photos of Mars that led to the theory of salt water on the planet. He, along with his long-term collaborator Professor McEwen, performed extensive research, and one thing led to another before NASA was able to confirm evidence of water on Mars.
