Spotify Has Become the World’s Most Popular Music Streaming App

Spotify’s Android and iOS apps are more popular than any other music stream app around the world, according to new data from App Annie. The mobile app analytics specialist’s new Mobile Music Streaming report has Spotify’s app topping the usage and download charts in many countries around the world, but it also shows growing usage for local players, especially in markets like India and Japan.
Spotify was the mobile music streaming app on iOS and Android with the largest number of active users worldwide in Q3, according to the report. On iOS, that title still belonged to Pandora a year ago. On Android, Pandora was actually able to grow its usage, and replace TuneIn as the second-most-popular streaming app.
Of course, it’s worth noting that Spotify has a much larger international footprint than Pandora. At this point, Pandora is only available to users in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. The fact that the company still managed to end up on second place on a worldwide scale shows just how big its U.S. user base is.
Spotify on the other hand is available in 58 markets around the world. The music service currently tops the download charts in nine of the 15 biggest music streaming markets, according to App Annie.
However, local competitors are also starting to have an impact. India’s two most popular music services Saavn and Gaana both were able to enter the top ten of Android apps worldwide, thanks to growing streaming music consumption in that country.
Deezer is still holding the lead in its home country France, and Japan, where Spotify still hasn’t launched, is dominated by local streaming services Line and Awa, according to App Annie.
