Spotify has acqui-hired the team from MightyTV, an NYC-based startup that combines machine learning with personalized picks to create movie and TV streaming watchlists for users of its app. As part of the move, MightyTV's founder and CEO Brian Adams will join the music streaming firm as its new vp of technology.
"It's time to say goodbye," the company said on its website, adding that its app will no longer be updated or available. "We're really excited about the road ahead." Financial terms of the aquisition were not disclosed.
According to Spotify's announcement, Adams will focus on advertising and marketing tech solutions in his new role. "The content recommendation system MightyTV has built is incredibly aligned with how we think about advertising technology and marketing personalization," said Jason Richman, Spotify's vp of product. "Brian and his team will help us continue to innovate on free monetization and extend our leadership position in programmatic audio."
Prior to MightyTV, Adams founded the publisher monetization platform Admeld, which was sold to Google in 2011. He then moved Google to lead DoubleClick before leaving in 2015. MightyTV launched in April 2016, offering a way for users to "discover and stream the best of movies and TV with a few easy swipes."
"Spotify has built the leading marketplace for fans and creators," said Adams in a statement. "It's an enormous opportunity for me and the team to help create native brand experiences that stay true to a product that millions love."
