On her 23rd birthday this past September, Kelsea Ballerini got the news that her latest single, "Peter Pan," had gone to the top of Billboard's Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts simultaneously, making her the first solo female artist to top both tallies in the same week. It's the third single Ballerini dropped from her debut full-length album The First Time and also the third to go No. 1 on Country Airplay -- an honor she was still trying to make sense of when she joined Soul Sisters to take stock of this crazy moment she's having.
"I've gotten to experience a lot of crazy moments in my life that I never thought I'd get to experience," she says, admitting, "I've experienced a breakup, I've experienced finding love."
Ballerini also tells us about her surprising dream collaboration (hint: it's with a rapper), what to expect from the second album she's currently writing and the decision she made about herself that proved to be the turning point in her career.
"In the music industry, for whatever reason, as a young girl especially, people are passive with you," she explains, "and you have to take yourself seriously and your craft seriously for people to do the same." Judging by the charts alone, it seems to be working.
