As she tells it in this episode of Soul Sisters, K.Flay was once complaining to a friend in college about the state of rap at the time (see: Ying Yang Twins) when her friend offered this response that changed her life forever: "Why don't you write a song?" he said.
And that's exactly what she did.
The Stanford grad (real name: Kristine Flaherty) goes on to explain the feeling of hearing her lyrical thoughts on tape for the first time like this: "The brain thing now is a physical thing, and isn't that a miracle? Like, a tiny little miracle of being alive?"
That miracle has been borne out through mixtapes, EPs, a debut album and now her latest LP, Every Where Is Some Where, due out April 7. Listen to K.Flay explain how she went from a fast-rapping student who was "just fucking around" to one of the genre's most exciting voices in the full episode below, hosted by Jessie Katz and Darah Golub at NYC's Chord Club.
