Song Premiere: Surf Gvng Call for Change on ‘Sam Cooke’

More than 40 years after late heralded soul singer Sam Cooke sang the hopeful “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Miami hip hop duo Surf Gvng (pronounced gang) offers their own perspective on the current state of race relations in America.

On the Black history-themed message that premieres exclusively on Yahoo Music, producer Rev Mizz mentions the Cooke song title in the chorus as members Geek and Wolf rap about a need for change. Geek rhymes, “I don’t want to hear ‘’Cause I’m Black and they racist’” and later adds, “Ain’t talking about Black and white / Only wrong from right.”

Similarly, Wolf conveys his frustrations in a verse that references a history of social ills that date back to biblical times: “Father Abraham had many sons / But so did Emmett Till / From bats and lynchings to student loans.”

The group hopes the song will help ease racial tension. “The song was birthed from us reflecting on the social injustices and racial views that’s occurring and how we can encourage the world to deal with it from both perspectives,” Surf Gvng said in a statement to Yahoo Music.

Surf Gvng released its self-titled debut in 2014.
