Song Premiere: Meghan Linsey’s ‘Counterfeit’ Is the Real Deal

Powerhouse singer Meghan Linsey got her start as one-half of the successful country duo Steel Magnolia, then broke out on her own, with a gritty new soul/blues sound, as the runner-up on the most recent season of The Voice. Now she’s making her voice heard on her debut solo EP Believer , and Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks has the first listen of her EP’s lead single, “Counterfeit,” right here.

“Counterfeit is about being authentic and expecting the best,” Meghan tells Yahoo. “I wrote this song with Tyler Cain and Julie Moriva. It’s a sassy anthem about being real and telling it like it is.”

The feisty-filly track isn’t a total departure from Meghan’s country roots; comparisons to badass/kickass country-rock chicks like Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves may come to mind as Meghan spits out lyrics like “Am I just too much to settle down?” and the seemingly “Bootylicious”-referencing “I don’t think you can handle it.” But there’s definitely a soul edge here, too. Fans of Meghan’s more uptempo Voice performances like “Love Runs Out” and “Tennessee Whiskey” will find much to love about this brassy, sassy track.

The six-track Believer EP, recorded in Nashville and produced by Meghan’s musician boyfriend Tyler Cain (Ashley Monroe, James Otto), comes out July 27 via Garth Brooks’s GhostTunes music service, followed by an iTunes release on July 31. The Voice returns for a ninth season on Sept. 21.
