Soilwork to Join NHL's New York Islanders at Upcoming Game in Brooklyn

The NHL's New York Islanders will be pumping up their Nov. 14 home game at Brooklyn's Barclays Center with a bit of metal.

The hockey team has invited Swedish metal band Soilwork to join it on Military Appreciation Day for fan-interaction activities during the game where the Islanders face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The music group will do interviews and a fan T-shirt toss. A fan-hype video will also air at the game, and Soilwork music videos will be played between periods.

Soilwork vocalist Bjorn "Speed" Strid, a longtime hockey fan, says, "Hockey has always been a big part of my life, and while living in Toronto for five years, I played a lot of 'shinny' -- beer-league hockey. I also got the chance to get to know [New York Islanders player] Nikolay Kulemin."

Strid started playing hockey at the age of 6 and stopped when he was 16. "I played in a local team called Landskrona, which also featured current NHL athletes," he says. "I was chosen among three other players from my club to be a part of Skane Team in 1994, which featured the best players from the southern region of Sweden. Slowly after that, I picked up the guitar and was blown away by the kick playing music gave me. I left my hockey career behind me and focused 100 percent on music, but always looked back."

Soilwork is headlining the Fury Tour, which includes support from Unearth, Wovenwar, Battlecross and Darkness Divided. Its remaining 2016 dates are as follows:

Nov. 11: Flint, Mich. @ The Machine Shop
Nov. 12: Pittsburgh @ Diesel
Nov. 13: New York @ The Gramercy Theatre
Nov. 15: Ottawa, Ontario @ The Brass Monkey
Nov. 16: Toronto @ Rockpile West
