Carlos Vives readily admits his is a story of redemption.
After nearly a decade out of the spotlight, he returned with a vengeance in 2013 with "Volví a Nacer" ("I Was Reborn"), a song which the title says it all; it would go on to win Latin Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Tropical Song.
Tuesday night (Nov. 15), Vives celebrated yet again, presenting a sneak peak of his upcoming CD/DVD, Carlos Vives + Amigos, recorded live in August 2015 before an audience of more than 40,000 in Bogotá's El Campín stadium.
"That concert was our comeback," Vives told Billboard prior to the screening at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas two days before the Latin Grammys. "It was a return to El Campín, which always was the stage for our concerts in Bogota. And it meant returning there with my friends."
The "friends" included Maluma, Michel Teló, Wisin, Daddy Yankee, Choquibtown and a slew of other Colombian artists who joined Vives onstage in what became a massive display of Colombian pride.
That feeling also permeates the CD/DVD which is equal parts live show and documentary on Bogotá and Colombian music. The CD companion includes current hit "La bicicleta" with Shakira. Beyond that, it's Vives' way of continuing to say thank you.
"Three years ago I would have never imagined being here," he told a crowd of more than 100 industry insiders and media. "Thanks for not leaving me behind."
Poignancy aside, there was also room for humor. Leading up to the screening, Vives, a soccer buff, sat with his Argentine friends and watched the Argentine national team demolish Colombia 3-0 in a World Cup Qualification match.
"It's hard to love a country that beats you in soccer," he joked to the crowd, which included his Argentine manager, Walter Kolm. "Things didn't end badly today thanks to Argentine rock."
Vives will perform Nov. 17 at the Latin Grammys, airing live on Univision. He is up for two awards, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "La bicicleta," his hit with Shakira. Carlos Vives + Amigos will be released Dec. 9 on Sony Music Latin.
