Indie artist Slow Dancer, born Simon Okely, is gearing up for his major label debut after recently signing to ATO records. To preview his upcoming album, In A Mood, Okely has shared two tracks so far: debut single "Don't Believe" and the beautifully affecting "It Goes On." Today, Apr. 27, the Australia native is sharing the video for the latter exclusively with Billboard.
As for the album, Okely wrote it entirely alone and at night, in hopes that doing so would translate to an intimate record; the video largely plays into that theme, showcasing various couples simply being together in their bedrooms. "I really wanted to capture the intimacy of a time that people aren't often privy to; it's generally a personal space -- the bedroom," he tells Billboard.
Of the bedrooms featured in the video, Okely included his own, which he says he moved into in January -- they filmed in March -- fresh after a breakup. He admits he felt nervous to showcase his own room (which he says "was a blank canvas" at the time, considering he hadn't lived there long, though it now houses his own recording studio), but says he "felt it was important to capture people's personalities and try to really grasp a sense of who they are from their belongings."
To help bring his vision to life, Okely called upon filmmaker and director Tobias Willis, who made him feel comfortable while shooting such simple yet personal moments. "Not wearing too many clothes and being shot in your own bedroom, the viewer doesn't always see shots like that," Okely says. "It can be quite intimidating having a small film crew in your bedroom for a day, but I've always felt that it's really important with my music and my art to push myself out of my comfort zone, to be as vulnerable and sincere as I can, even if that means filming a video in my newly acquainted room with my s--tty Ikea furniture and just going with it."
