See It First! Idol David Cook Premieres ‘Criminals’ Lyric Video

David Cook, the winner of American Idol Season 7 and arguably one of the most game-changing contestants in Idol history, hasn’t released a full-length album since 2011’s This Loud Morning. But he’s finally returning with a new album, Digital Vein, and Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks is excited to premiere the lyric video for Digital Vein’s soaring, Wallflowers-esque lead single, “Criminals,” right here.

The bookish Cook has been calling himself a “word nerd” ever since his Idol days, so of course his lyric video puts a clever spin on the single’s title with a ransom-note motif. The punky, Sex Pistols-reminiscent graphics are also fitting for Cook, the first rock ‘n’ roll Idol champ ever.

When discussing the long delay between his albums, Cook recently told Yahoo Music that it’s been worth the wait, and that he’s happier overall with Digital Vein than he was with This Loud Morning, his last release for RCA Records — because he was able to record this one on his own time, and on his own terms.

“I think This Loud Morning was such an undertaking, and I did put a lot of pressure on myself, so much that I think I might have missed out on some of the fun,” he revealed. “I think I might have mentally gotten in my own way a little bit, as far as just the process of making that record and being able to walk into a studio every day and enjoy it. I mean, Jesus, this job’s supposed to be fun! But I’ve had a blast making this [new] record, and I’ve even, God forbid, actually enjoyed some of the business side of it, trying to get this record off the ground and out to the public. I think just being able to experiment with really no deadline and no pressure — I started this record not sure if I was even going to finish it — and just being able to try things and be creatively free, was huge. That’s what it’s all about.”

Digital Vein is due out via the INgrooves Music Group on Sept. 18 and can be pre-ordered on iTunes HERE.
