Sabrina Carpenter: See 'Girl Meets World' Star's Yahoo Performance
Sabrina Carpenter was a natural choice to land a role in the new Disney series Girl Meets World, a spinoff of ABC’s 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World. Even though Carpenter was born in 1999, one year before Boy wrapped production after seven seasons, she became a fan by watching the show’s reruns when she was in elementary school.
"My favorite thing before going to school was watching Full House, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Boy Meets World,” Carpenter told Yahoo Music when she recently stopped by the office to perform three songs, including “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying,” her current single. “After the audition process, it was a sigh of relief: ‘I finally got here!’ I was very determined.”
Carpenter portrays Maya Hart, the best friend of Rowan Blanchard’s character Riley Matthews, who is the daughter of Boy Meet World stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel. Though Carpenter loves acting and has appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Phineas and Ferb, Orange Is the New Black, and Daniel Radcliffe’s new horror film Horns, she is equally passionate about making music.
Carpenter and Blanchard recorded the Girl Meets World theme song, and last April she released her Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying EP; she’s working on an album. The new record will showcase her evolution. “I did a lot of my own songs for the full album, just a growth and maturity in my voice,” Carpenter said. “Lot of finding myself, listening to new styles. I just wanted to put a little bit of that into a full album.”
During her tween years, Carpenter developed an online following for her YouTube covers of songs by Adele, Christina Aguilera, and Vanessa Carlton. Before then, her parents had her studying the legends. “The first songs I learned was ‘Crazy’ by Patsy Cline and ‘At Last’ by Etta James,” she said. “I had been growing up with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, great bands.”
Due to her busy schedule, Carpenter tapes Girl Meets World during the weekdays and works on her music on weekends. She’s even found a way for the two artistic worlds to complement each other. “Singing is about telling a story,” she explained. “When you are onstage, you get to be your own self… When acting, you’re someone else. I think they both help each other out. I think that it’s really cool to have both in the back of your pocket.”
