Weezer vs. Sheryl Crow: Vote For the Best Summer Songs, Round 2
Summer is here, and the time is right for dancing in the streets. But what's the best summer song to soundtrack such activities? We here at Y! Music decided to hold a mega-poll to answer that (sun)burning summer question: a no-holds-barred tournament to determine the best summer anthem of all time.
After lots of heated (pun intended) debate, we've selected 32 of the most memorable summer songs ever, pitting them against each other in a winner-takes-all bracket. Scroll down to vote for this match-up!
"Island in the Sun" - Weezer
Weezer's light-hearted "Island in the Sun" won out over Queens of the Stone Age's "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" with 66% of votes.
Even pasty-white geeks need to stop playing Dungeons & Dragons, get out of the attic, and take in some sunshine once in a while — as this 2001 vacation singalong by everyone's favorite indie-rock nerd-boys readily proved. This second single off Weezer's comeback effort The Green Album was so celebratory, in fact, it got two music videos: one directed by Marcos Siega, which took place at a Mexican wedding, and a more widely seen, cute-overloaded one lensed by Spike Jonze, starring a zoo's worth of wild, adorable animals.
"Soak Up The Sun" - Sheryl Crow
Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up The Sun" won out over Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" with 52% of votes.
She may not have had digital or diddly squat (which, of course, is a bit of an exaggeration), but Sheryl Crow certainly had a hit on her hands in 2002 with "Soak Up The Sun." Kid Rock's erstwhile duet partner/rumored love interest's own totally brainless--but infuriatingly catchy--summer anthem is still blasting on air-conditioned mall soundsystems more than a decade later. Crow is joined by another hot blonde, Liz Phair, who provided backing vocals on the track; and their lilting voices meld seamlessly as they urge listeners to lighten up. Admit it, you too have sang the song's last line, "Got my 45 on, so I can rock on," a tad too enthusiastically at least once in your life.
