Pussy Riot Members Flee Russia to Avoid Arrest

Two members of feminist punk band Pussy Riot have left Russia in order to avoid arrest, the Guardian reports.

Police had announced last week that they were searching for additional members of the group after Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to two years in prison on "hooliganism" charges for their anti-Putin "Punk Prayer" protest at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral. The two women now on the run had also participated in the performance.

"In regard to the pursuit, two of our members have successfully fled the country! They are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!" a Twitter message from the Pussy Riot account said.

"Since the Moscow police said they are searching for them, they will keep a low profile for now," Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, told Reuters. "They are in a safe place beyond the reach of the Russian police."

Verzilov also noted that an additional 12 to 14 members of the group still remain active in Russia. "It's a big collective," he said.
