Nicki Minaj Fires Back at Hot 97
Following her sudden withdrawal from her Hot 97 Summer Jam set this past weekend, Nicki Minaj called into Funkmaster Flex's show last night to address the situation. The mood was tense, but over the hourlong interview, Minaj and Flex attempted to clear the air over YMCMB honcho Lil Wayne's decision to pull Minaj from the show. While Flex felt Minaj's reaction was too extreme and that she should've continued to play despite Lil Wayne's urging, Minaj countered that she would never go against Wayne.
At first, Flex was reluctant to recant Peter Rosenberg's harsh statements on Minaj and her single "Starships," but later in the interview he admitted, "Rosenberg didn't pick the right time and place to say that," though he stopped short of an apology. He followed by maintaining that Wayne shouldn't have kept fans from seeing Minaj.
For her part, Minaj was apologetic to fans, promising a free New York show sometime this summer to make up for her absence, and stood her ground against Flex. "When you want our team to come to your show, treat us with respect. And that's all we're asking," she said. "We're not asking for any special treatment. Just respect. And I'm very proud of my team, and the way they stood behind me."
Peter Rosenberg also addressed the situation separately on Hot 97, refusing to apologize. "I was in the zone of doing real hip-hop," he said. "I’m absolutely not apologizing, because I didn't do anything wrong." Rosenberg also maintained that his opinion on Minaj has been consistent for for six months, regardless of the added attention of Summer Jam. "I have been saying this for six months. I'm not gonna change my stance [because] I'm at Summer Jam," he said.
