Music Sales: ‘Frozen’ Soundtrack Ices Competition

The soundtrack for Disney’s toon hit “Frozen” clung to the top of the U.S. album chart for a second frame last week amid typically quiet January music sales.

Despite a slip of 48% from its previous week’s tally, “Frozen” still collected sales of 86,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending Jan. 12. That tally – the first under 100,000 units for a No. 1 album since September — was big enough to retain the crown for the soundtrack for a second week. The album has moved 589,000 to date. “Frozen” has grossed $318 million in eight weeks on domestic screens.

Another late-2013 star performer, Beyonce’s self-titled Columbia release, also held its ground at No. 2 with 79,000 sold )down 40%).

L.A. rapper Kid Ink had the distinction of becoming the first new artist to grace the top 10 in 2014, as his major-label debut “My Own Lane” (RCA) bowed at No. 3 with a 50,000-unit score. The performer, born Brian Collins, reached No. 20 on the album chart in mid-2012 with his indie release “Up & Away.”

Remainder of the top 10 remained fairly static, as the release schedule was quiet during the second stanza of the new year.

Rounding out the bestsellers were Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” (No. 4, 36,000 sold, off 35%), Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” (No. 5, 33,000, down 28%), One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” (No. 6, 24,000, off 46%), Katy Perry’s “Prism (No. 7, 23,000, down 55%), Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz” (No. 8, 20,000, down 34%), Imagine Dragons’ “Night Visions” (No. 9, 17,000, off 44%) and R. Kelly’s “Black Panies” (No. 10, 17,000, off 44%). The latter two titles were separated by sales of just 117 copies.
