Lady Antebellum's 'Compass' Points To No. 1 On Country Airplay Chart

Lady Antebellum returns to the top of Billboard's Country Airplay chart, as "Compass" steers 2-1. The song is the trio' first No. 1 in nearly a year, and its eighth overall, on the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay chart.

Lady A first ruled the July 25, 2009, chart with "I Run to You" and had most recently reached the summit last spring with "Downtown." The latter leader marked the trio's fastest No. 1 climb (12 weeks) when it peaked on the April 27, 2013, list for the first of two weeks at No. 1.

Perhaps most notably, pop/R&B writing and production duo Stargate, aka Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, co-wrote "Compass." The pair has written and produced smashes including Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s for Ne-Yo ("So Sick"), Beyonce ("Irreplaceable"), Katy Perry ("Firework"), Wiz Khalifa ("Black and Yellow") and, most prolifically, Rihanna ("Take a Bow," "Rude Boy," "Only Girl (In the World)," "What's My Name?," "S&M" and "Diamonds").

"Compass" is "kind of different for us," says Lady Antebellum's Charles Kelley. "We've never reached outside of Nashville to find a song. The minute we heard it, we knew we could countrify it up a bit. We wanted to make a big arena-feeling song, but still very country and organic. We feel like we've made an arena hoedown with it."

"Compass" has sold 469,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

All charts, including Country Airplay, will refresh on Thursday (March 13) on Billboard.com.
