Keith Urban Narrowly Beats the Weeknd in Album Sales

In a squeaker, country vocalist Keith Urban edged out hip-hopper the Weeknd for the U.S. album sales crown last week.

Urban’s Capitol Nashville set “Fuse” claimed No. 1 with first-week sales of 98,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ending Sept. 15. It is the Aussie country singer’s fourth chart-topper; while it bested the No. 2 bow of his 2010 release “Get Closer,” it was well off that collection’s 162,000-unit debut performance.

Canada’s the Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) took No. 2 with “Kissland” (Republic), which opened at 95,000 copies, hot behind Urban’s release. He managed to best the No. 4 mark attained by his 2012 bow “Trilogy,” which compiled his mixtape work.

Four other new albums crashed the top 10 this week. Rapper 2 Chainz’s “B.O.A.T.S. II: MeTime” (Def Jam) arrived at No. 3, shifting 63,000. The abbreviated title is a reference to Chainz’s 2012 hit “Based on a T.R.U. Story,” which claimed No. 1 with a 147,000-unit frame.

Janelle Monae made her first top-10 appearance with “The Electric Lady” (Bad Boy), which captured No. 5 with a 47,000-unit tally. The new-look R&B vocalist topped out at No. 17 with her full-length bow “The Archandroid: Suites II and III” in 2010. She was featured on Fun.’s 2012 smash “We Are Young.”

English rock quartet Arctic Monkeys attained their highest U.S. chart position ever with “AM” (Domino), which entered at No. 6 with 42,000 sold. The Sheffield foursome’s 2007 offering “Favorite Worst Nightmare” was their previous personal best, peaking at No. 7.

Finally, Sheryl Crow’s “Feels Like Home” took No. 7 with an out-of-the-box tally of 36,000. The singer’s Warner Bros. debut represented a genre leap into country music after two decades of pop stardom. It is her lowest-charting release since 1996, when her eponymous sophomore title peaked at No. 6.

Holding over in the top 10 were Luke Bryan’s “Crash My Party” (No. 4, 53,000, down 22%), Tamar Braxton’s “Love and War” (No. 8, 35,000, off 70%), Ariana Grande’s “Yours Truly” (No. 9, 31,000, down 77%) and John Legend’s “Love in the Future” (No. 10, 30,000, off 55%).

Jack Johnson and Elvis Costello & the Roots will be in contention for top debuts next week.
