Ellie Goulding, Zedd to Perform 'Divergent' Songs at MTV Movie Awards
MTV will up the music quotient of its annual Movie Awards by bringing in Ellie Goulding and Zedd to perform selections from "Divergent" and MTV Artist to Watch twenty one pilots to perform their new single in a newly created "music discovery slot."
Goulding, a Cherrytree/Interscope artist, will perform "Beating Heart" and Zedd, who also records for Interscope, will perform "Find You" with Matthew Koma and singer Miriam Bryant. Twenty one pilots, a Columbus, Ohio, duo signed to Fueled by Ramen, will perform "Car Radio" at the MTV Movie Awards on April 13. The show will be broadcast from Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre.
The video for "Beating Heart," with Goulding donning the tattoos of the two lead characters in "Divergent," premiered on MTV on March 11. The song debuted last week at No. 98 on the Billboard Hot 100, having sold 55,000 downloads as of March 23, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
Twenty one pilots previously performed at the 2013 mtvU Woodies Awards. The MTV Movie Awards are positioned as a platform for studios to advertise and promote upcoming summer movies and largely shy away from musical offerings. Booking the up-and-coming twenty one pilots – they have released an album and an EP – was inspired by the recent MTV Video Music Awards bookings of Florence + the Machine and Young the Giant.
Conan O'Brien will be the host of the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, the show's 23rd edition. Nominees for best musical moment range from the Backstreet Boys' appearance in "This is the End" to the use of Bo Diddley's "Pretty Thing" in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
