R. Kelly fans looking for a more spiritual side to the R&B star are in luck. In an interview with Rap-Up, the singer revealed that he's been working on a Christmas album, which should be out in time for the 2014 holiday season.
Titled The 12 Nights of Christmas, the new album sounds like it might be following in the libidinous vein of his most recent release, Black Panties. "It's gonna be a lot of love-making," Kelly said of the holiday record. "I come with that, bearing gifts."
If Kelly can whip up seductive jams on the theme of dolphins and ice hockey, there's little doubt that he can bring the spirit of "Sex Planet" to Christmas. (He already has one Christmas number under his his contribution to The Best Man Holiday soundtrack, "Christmas I'll Be Steppin'".)
The project has been in the works for a while; Kelly said he started it last Christmas. "But I don't believe in just putting out a Christmas album just to sell records," he said, explaining that it would have to rise to the standards of Donny Hathaway's 1970 soul classic, "This Christmas." "In order to get that and capture that moment, you have to take a couple of Christmases and then you come with it," he said.
Kelly also told Rap-Up that he's already written half of another, unnamed non-Christmas album."I got like seven, eight albums sitting up like rockets like that, just ready to be launched," he said, describing the next project as "another 12-play album." "You know, there's been a love-making album drought, if you will, per my fans, and I've come to save the day."
