We last spoke to Loom when he was releasing his Grade EP via Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper Records at the end of 2014, and now it’s time to get him back on your radar. He’s about to drop a new EP, European Heartache, and it mines the same fertile ground as his previous EP, part nostalgia, part hard-edged futurism. Rooted in instrumental grime, the new five track EP is distinctly Loom, rich with emotion, packed with moments of both total serenity and outright chaos.

“[Since the last EP] I’ve got some synths,” Loom tells us, “So it’s been cool working them into my music. I’m more interested in rhythm now, was really focused on melody/harmony before. I’m sure that’ll swing back around though.” The EP also comes with the following mission statement:

“The core theme in my EP is a struggle with identity. What’s my identity when society dictates how I should present myself because of my race, sex, religion, sexual preference. What’s my identity, when the borders keep changing, when I’ve been displaced, fled my country because of war, what’s my identity when my sex changes? Do I even know my own identity, or am I just portraying what I think is expected of me?”

Today we’re premiering the twisting, turning “Dyed Black Hair,” which you can listen to alongside two more tracks from Loom’s European Heartache EP.

Buy the EP here or via iTunes here. It’s out this Friday, February 12 via Gobstopper Records.
