Welcome to the new episode of the Billboard.com Pop Shop Podcast, Billboard's weekly audio breakdown of the Billboard charts, hottest music news and year's biggest musical events. Casual pop fans and chart junkies can hear Billboard co-director of charts Keith Caulfield and Billboard.com senior editor Katie Atkinson every Tuesday on the Pop Shop Podcast, which can be streamed on Billboard.com or downloaded in iTunes (click here to listen to the previous Tuesday's edition of the show on Billboard.com).
On the new show, we catch up with Shawn Mendes! We recently sat down with the singer/songwriter to talk about his Illuminate World Tour (which kicks off April 27 in Glasgow), life on the road, and how he's eager to release new music.
In our chat -- which was recorded before he announced his new single "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" on April 18 -- Mendes teased how he was hoping to drop a brand new song in the near future, even though he had only released two singles from his No. 1 Billboard 200 Illuminate album (released in September of 2016).
"I think if you're creating music and you love the song, holding it back is just doing it an injustice. Sometimes when the song is right for that time period it's just kinda bad to let it wait and then when you do release it eight months down the road, it's not the same."
Further, Mendes says his next album is already in the works. "We're trying to plan everything so that there's time to make music, too. I'll be writing and recording a lot on the road. I want to make sure I have a good amount of time to create the next album."
What might fans expect from Mendes' stage show during the Illuminate World Tour? Potential covers (perhaps of Hunter Hayes), possible collaborations with opening act Charlie Puth, and a production with "new technology" -- but definitely "no flying" from Mendes on high-wires. What about a hologram of Mendes? "Possibly," he laughs.
Mendes also talks about what life is like in his downtime on tour (think: Netflix, working out, basketball games and ping-pong tournaments) and how he's got two tour buses: one for sleeping, and one for recording.
In addition to our interview with Mendes, the Pop Shop Podcast team discusses all the Coachella-related news about Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Lorde (and all of the new music they just released). Plus, we've got chart updates about Harry Styles' top five debut on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Sign of the Times" (and how it's the highest bow for an act's debut single in over a year). Further, we review the big news at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart, where The Chainsmokers nab their first No. 1, Pentatonix scores its lucky seventh top 10 set, and how Lamar is heading for his third chart-topping next week with DAMN.
