Pixies Guitarist Joey Santiago Checks Into Rehab

The Pixies announced Friday (Sept. 16) that guitarist Joey Santiago has checked into a rehab facility to treat unspecified drug and alcohol issues. The band -- led by singer Black Francis and featuring drummer David Lovering and most recent recruit bassist Paz Lenchantin -- said Santiago will be in an unspecified facility for "at least" 30 days.

"This is the best thing that Joey could have done, and we're very proud that he's taken this step," Lovering said in a statement. "We ask all of our fans to support Joey while he's on this road to recovery."

The band's longtime publicist said in the statement that the Pixies "fully intend" to tour the U.K. and Europe as planned in November and December, but that Santiago's rehab stint will affect some of the planned promotion in support of the group's upcoming album, Head Carrier (Sept. 30), including a Sept. 26 performance on Conan. The beloved alt-rock group's sixth full-length record and the first to feature Lenchantin as an official member follows up 2014's reunion LP, Indie Cindy.
